Community Food Security Report Card

from the Thunder Bay Food Strategy:

A growing local food scene and strong community support means the time is ripe to take a more coordinated approach to addressing food issues and to designing solutions that protect and nourish the environment, foster local and diverse economic development, build community, improve access to food, and much more.

This Report Card establishes baselines around the 7 pillars of the Thunder Bay and Area Food Strategy so that progress towards a food secure community can be measured. Involvement and support from all sectors of the community will continue to be key in making measurable progress towards community food security.

Community Food Security Hub Newsletter (Issue 2, 2015)

Community First: Impacts of Community Engagement’s (CFICE) has released the latest issue of the Community Food Security (CFS) Hub newsletter.

Launched in 2012, CFICE is a seven-year partnership project that aims to support Canadian non-profits, universities, and colleges to build more innovative and resilient communities by exploring the question: How can community campus partnerships be designed and implemented to maximize the value created for non-profit, community-based organizations?

YMCA Cedar Glen Hiring Farm Manager

YMCA Cedar Glen Outdoor Centre is a year round operation, open 7 days a week, which delivers outdoor education programs to school groups, youth and adult retreats, a day camp and an overnight camp focused on leadership development during the summer months. The centre also operates a fruit and vegetable farm and Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) system.

Reporting to the Facility Manager, the Farm Team Leader is responsible for planning and carrying out the day to day operations of the fruit and vegetable farm and the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) system with the key objective to maximize productivity while utilizing organic farming practices. The position aids in delivering the highest quality farm education programs to outdoor education and summer camp participants that align with the overall mission, vision and values of the YMCA. The Inuvik Community Greenhouse, home of the Community Garden Society of Inuvik, is the most northerly greenhouse in North America and the only Community Greenhouse of its kind in the world!

The Inuvik Community Greenhouse is located at the corner of Gwich’in Road and Breynat Street, behind the Igloo Church, and is open from May until October. Read more

10,000-sq-metre roof top farm makes waves in China

BEIJING: This 10,000-square-metre farm in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality may look ordinary at first glance. But this is an exceptional farm situated on top of a sprawling factory that manufactures doors. It is big enough that a tractor is needed to help with farming. The factory’s staff grow crops there, as well as raise poultry and livestock.

Factory official Lu Xiaoqing explained the company’s rationale for setting it up. “It would be a waste if we left the big rooftop unused. That’s why we created a farming project that involves our staff…”. Read more

Fortnightly Feast vol. 22

Début

Début, the first issue of Canadian Food Studies / La Revue canadienne des études sur l’alimentation went live on May 20, 2014. CFS/RCÉA is the open-access, online journal of the Canadian Association for Food Studies. The journal’s peer-reviewed articles and commentaries, as well as visuals and voices from the field, collectively illuminate multiple dimensions of the Canadian foodscape.

Eating Well in Pictou Landing: Pollution and access are daily challenges

A new research report reveals that pollution and ecological changes around Pictou Landing First Nation (in Nova Scotia) are the most significant community challenge when it comes to eating well. Community members shared photographs and stories to describe their experiences with food and point to their key concerns, which also included physical and economic access to healthy food.

The Story of The Seed webinar

Join Food Secure Canada on Thursday May 22, at 1PM Eastern / 10AM Pacific for the story of how the community of Guelph, Ontario is changing the way it thinks about food security. The presenters will share the results of some local research on the issue, and discuss the actions that have been connected to that research. The focus will be on how a coalition of community partners have come together to create The Seed – a project informed by local research and community consultation, and inspired by the Community Food Centre model.
